Oximetry Probe Definition

The oximeter probe, fully known as SPO2 Sensor/SPO2 Probe, refers to that the finger cuff of the probe is fixed at the finger end of the patient, the finger is used as a transparent container for holding hemoglobin, the red light with the wavelength of 660 nm and the near-infrared light with the wavelength of 940 nm are used as the incoming light source to determine the light transmission intensity through the tissue bed to calculate the hemoglobin concentration and oxygen saturation. SPO2, pulse rate and pulse wave can be obtained through monitoring. Used for blood oxygen monitoring on various patients, ECG monitor is connected at the other end.

Definition of oxygen saturation

Oxygen saturation refers to the maximum solubility of oxygen in blood, which is mainly bound by hemoglobin. In general, there is no change, but if it changes in the environment with a high carbon monoxide content, resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning, that is, gas poisoning, because carbon monoxide has a high affinity for hemoglobin and will preferentially bind to carbon monoxide, resulting in a risk of decreased oxygen content in the blood. Oxygen saturation is 98% in normal human arterial blood and 75% in venous blood. It is generally believed that SPO2 should not be less than 94% normal and less than 94% is insufficient oxygen supply. Some scholars have defined SPO2 < 90% as the criterion for hypoxemia, and believe that the accuracy can reach ± 2% when SPO2 is higher than 70% and error can occur when SPO2 is lower than 70%. In clinical practice, the SPO2 values of several patients have been compared with arterial oxygen saturation values, and it is believed that SPO2 readings can reflect the respiratory function of patients and reflect the changes in pulse oxygen. Routine application of pulse oximetry monitoring in patients after thoracic surgery can provide meaningful indicators for clinical observation of changes in the condition, avoid repeated blood sampling of patients, and reduce the workload of nurses, which is worthy of promotion.

The SPO2 instrument consists of three main parts: probe, functional module and display part. For most monitors on the market, the technology to detect SPO2 is well-established. Whether the SPO2 value detected by a monitor is accurate or not is largely related to the probe, and there are many factors affecting the probe detection. The detection devices used for the probe, medical wires and connection technology will affect the detection results. 1. Detector: Detected signal light emitting diode and photodetector are the core components of the probe. It is also the key to determine whether the test values are accurate or not. Theoretically, when the wavelength of red light is 660 nm and the wavelength of infrared light is 940 mm, the detected value is ideal, but due to the complexity of the manufacturing process of the device, the wavelength of the produced red light and infrared light is always deviated. The magnitude of the deviation in light wavelength will affect the value detected. So the manufacturing technology of LED and photodetector is very important. 2. Medical conductor: In addition to imported materials (high elastic strength and corrosion resistance are very reliable), double-layer shielding is also designed to restrain noise interference and maintain signal integrity compared with single-layer or no shielding.

Soft pad: The probe manufactured by R-RUI uses a specially designed soft pad (finger pad), which is comfortable and reliable, has no allergic contact with the skin, and can be suitable for patients of different body shapes. It is also designed in a fully wrapped design to avoid interference due to light leakage from finger movements. 

4. Finger clip: The body finger clip uses fire-proof grade non-toxic ABS materials, which are firm and not easily damaged. A light visor is also designed on the finger clip to better shield the peripheral light source. 

5. One of the main causes of SPO2 damage in general is due to loose springs and insufficient elasticity to insufficient clamping force. R-RUI uses high-tension electroplated carbon steel springs that are reliable and durable.

6. Terminal: In order to ensure the reliable connection durability of the probe, special process gold-plated terminals are used considering the attenuation during signal transmission on the connection terminals with the monitor. 

7. Connection process: The connection process of the probe is also very important for the detection results, and the position placed by the soft pad is corrected and tested to ensure that the position of the transmitter and receiver of the detection device is correct. 

8. In terms of accuracy, ensure that when the SPO2 value is 70% -100%, the error does not exceed positive and negative 2%, and the accuracy is higher, so that the detection results are more reliable.
